Indiana University Professors Named Editors-In-Chief of Prestigious
Journal on Nonprofits and Philanthropy

IUPUI's Bielefeld, Burlingame To Lead Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly

INDIANAPOLIS-Dwight Burlingame, associate executive director and director of academic programs for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and Wolfgang Bielefeld, professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), recently were named editors-in-chief of the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly ( NVSQ ).

The journal is a publication of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). The first such journal on those issues, and now in its 32nd year of publication with an international readership, it is considered the flagship journal of the interdisciplinary field of study.

"It is a real tribute not only to their scholarly standing but also to the collective talent assembled at the Center and the School," said Astrid E. Merget, dean of the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Many of the most distinguished scholars and experts in the nonprofit sector, representing more than 30 leading universities and research institutions, serve on NVSQ 's editorial board. Its rigorous peer-review process draws on the expertise of more than 350 independent reviewers. Only about 10 percent of articles are accepted for publication when initially submitted, and, overall, only 22 percent of articles are accepted at all.

"It is an honor to have two IUPUI scholars chosen to lead this prestigious journal," said Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy. "Both are well known for their deep commitment to expanding research about nonprofit organizations and philanthropy, which are an integral, complex and rapidly growing factor in our society today."

Bielefeld and Burlingame were recommended by a committee comprising other scholars of the subject and were appointed by the ARNOVA board of directors. Qualifications for the editorship include a reputation for significant scholarly achievement, familiarity with the literature, and knowledge of the international community of scholars and leaders in the field. The professors will assume their new roles in mid-2004. They will succeed current editor Steven Rathgeb Smith of the University of Washington, who is completing his second three-year term and is term-limited.

Bielefeld previously has served ARNOVA as a board member, vice president for meetings, and as a member of its conference scholarship committee. Since 1994, he has been a member of the editorial board for VOLUNTAS - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations . He is the co-author of an award-winning book and author or co-author of numerous other publications. Bielefeld also is a professor of philanthropic studies and sociology at IUPUI. Before he joined the faculty at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI in 1999, he was a faculty member at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Burlingame has been actively involved with ARNOVA since 1991, including serving as its treasurer. He is a member and former chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Research Council, the author or co-author of eight books, and currently is editor of the Encyclopedia of American Philanthropy , to be published in three volumes by Clio Press in 2004. He is a professor of philanthropic studies and public and environmental affairs at IUPUI. He previously was vice president for university relations and a professor at Bowling Green State University.

"Dr. Bielefeld and I look forward to working closely with our colleagues around the world who are collectively defining the future of scholarship in philanthropy and nonprofit studies," Burlingame said. " NVSQ addresses cutting-edge issues in the nonprofit sector. Our goal is to continue and expand its leadership in that area."

NVSQ is published by Sage Publications under an agreement with ARNOVA. ARNOVA is an interdisciplinary association of more than 1,000 scholars and practitioners from more than 35 countries. It fosters and disseminates research through various publications, conferences and electronic communications. The ARNOVA office is located on the IUPUI campus and is an external agency of Indiana University operated through the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
