Searching the Million Dollar List

While the Center on Philanthropy collected as much information about each gift as available, not all of the following information is recorded for each gift. For example, the city of the donor may not be known, but the city of the recipient organization may be recorded. Description of Search Terms

  • First Name – the first name of each individual donor or first names of a couple or a family with the same last name. (Examples: John and Jill, or Jill, Mark, Susan, and Robert)
  • Last Name – the last name of each individual donor or a couple/family’s common last name, the name of a corporation, corporate foundation, and other types of foundations, other groups not involving individuals, the denotation anonymous is also coded under last name, and finally, estate gifts are noted under last name. [Examples: Smith, Verizon Wireless, Starbucks Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Citizens to Stop Hunger, Anonymous, or Smith (Estate)]
  • Donor Description - any details about the donor such as work title, board member, alumnus, etc. (Example: Executive Director of the Spaulding Group)
  • City – the donor’s city (Example: Boston)
  • State - donor’s state, always use the two letter designation (Example: NY)
  • Dollars – the dollar amount of the gift using all numbers, a dollar sign, and commas. (Example: $5,000,000)
  • Recipient – the organization or group that received the gift (Example: American Red Cross)
  • State of Recipient – the state of the recipient using the two letter designation. If outside U.S., the country is listed (Example: MO or Canada)
  • Gift Notes – text on the purpose of the gift (Example: to buy computers for a shelter)
  • Subsector – the type of organization that received the gift.
    • ach – Arts, culture, and humanities organizations
    • edu – Educational institutions (includes K-12, libraries, and educational organizations; does not include higher education)
    • env – Organizations that protect or advocate for the environment and/or animals
    • fdtn – Foundations (does not include community foundations)
    • gov – Governmental organizations/agencies (Cities, Parks Departments)
    • he – Higher Education (Colleges, Universities)
    • hlth – Health-related Organization (Hospitals, Hospices, mental health, medical research, American Cancer Society)
    • hsv – Human Services Organizations (includes organizations meeting basic needs [food, shelter], youth development, U.S. disaster preparation/relief, legal services, employment assistance, food and agriculture, sports and recreation)
    • intl – Organization that is based in the United States but whose mission is focused on international efforts
    • over – Organizations located outside of the United States
    • psb – Public Society Benefit organizations (community foundations, research institutions, Jewish Federations, United Way)
    • rel – Religious organizations (does not include religiously affiliated schools, universities, or hospitals)
    • unk – Organization or Organization type is unknown
  • Group - groups within various subsectors
    • K-12 (K-12 schools; a group in the education subsector)
    • cmty fdn (community foundations; a group in the public society benefit subsector)
  • Disaster - An X indicates the gift was for disaster relief
  • Type of Donor
    • Individual Males – one male donor
    • Individual Females – one female donor
    • Couples – one donor couple
    • Families – donors from the same family
    • Other Groups - multiple couples, groups of individuals not related, Indian Tribes, or groups that do not fit anywhere else
    • Corporations, Corporate Foundations – corporation and foundations associated with corporations
    • Foundations – foundations not associated with corporations
    • Anonymous – those donors wishing to remain anonymous
  • Type of Donation
    • Estate - donation was part of an estate gift Pledge - gifts that have been promised (pledged), but not yet paid Payment over time - gifts that will be paid over time Challenge grant - gifts requiring additional funds to be raised
  • Source - the news/media source that announced/went public with the gift
  • Date Reported - when the gift was reported by that news source
  • Quarter - in what quarter the gift was announced
  • Year - in what year the gift was announced
