The Fund Raising School, an international leader in fundraising training and professional development, and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, a nationally ranked leader in nonprofit management education, are pleased to announce this brand new course offering. It is one of four required courses for the new Certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership.

You will leave this seminar with clear action steps for refining and sustaining your strategic plan and enhancing your leadership effectiveness. Using an experiential and problem-solving approach, you will be able to answer the following questions:

  1. How do I improve my strategic plan?
  2. How do I utilize metrics to achieve desired outcomes?
  3. How do I improve my own leadership abilities?
  4. How do I effectively engage people to produce results?

Course Description

Strategic planning is essential for the effective leadership and management of nonprofit organizations, particularly in volatile and uncertain operating environments. This course will explore key aspects of building and sustaining a high performance organization through strategic planning. Participants will learn a practical model for conducting successful strategic planning. In the process, participants will create improvement plans for revising and updating existing strategic plans, and create individualized plans for professional growth and development relating to their own leadership styles. Topics include:

  • Leading and managing the process of strategic planning
  • Engaging board, staff and other stakeholders
  • Leading and measuring implementation of the strategic plan
Facilitator

Stuart G. Shepley is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Executive Education Program in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. Stuart previously worked for Indiana University both as an Administrator at Bradford Woods Outdoor Center and as a Faculty member in the School of Health, Physical Education Recreation. He is an experienced teacher, facilitator, administrator and consultant.

Stuart has been in the USA since 1986, moving with his family, from England. In England he was purchasing manager for an international mining company, and more recently an operations manager for an engineering company. Immediately prior to moving to the States he worked as a director of a social service agency where his responsibilities included the training of staff work teams and students.

Stuart has taught at both the Graduate and Undergraduate level. His areas of expertise are organizational effectiveness, leadership development, team development and training trainers. Stuart is also involved in personal growth programs and seminar teaching. He is particularly interested in the use of experiential activity and adventure programming in all teaching environments. He has written articles on the topic of utilization of experiential activities as a component of personal development as well as an integral part of course curriculum.

Through his associations at Indiana University, Stuart has consulted internationally with many top companies, government agencies, health organizations and institutions of higher education. Much of this work has been focused on developing and managing high performance organizations and work teams. As part of the Executive Education program Stuart has taught with many organizations including the Department of Defense, Department of Transportation, Hospital Health Administration and many individual work units within those organizations.

Stuart holds undergraduate degrees in management studies and social work/counseling from English Universities and a master’s degree from Indiana University.

CFRE Education Points

Full participation in Strategic Planning and Leadership is applicable for 12.75 points in Category 1.B - Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.
