Dean's Update

Dean Amir PasicWe were pleased to welcome two new members to the Board of Visitors this month, both alumni of our master’s degree program. Erdal Yildirim, M.A. ‘05, is President of the Koç Foundation based in Istanbul, Turkey, and Derrick Feldmann, M.A. ‘04, is founder of Achieve, a dynamic research and marketing agency for causes, based in Indianapolis. And we congratulate Board of Visitors member Cindy Simon Skjodt on her recent nomination by President Obama to be a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.
In August the school hosted Wojciech Kaczmarczyk, Poland’s Secretary of State at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and Government Plenipotentiary for Civil Society and Equal Treatment. Mr. Kaczmarczyk has been tasked with proposing a national service program for Poland. We were all treated to an informative and enlightening series of conversations led by Professor Les Lenkowsky, former CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

In addition to attending various retreats to mark the beginning of a new academic year, I was pleased to meet with former Board of Visitors member and current adjunct faculty member Jim Morris, as well as current Board of Visitors member Cindy Simon Skojdt. I was also pleased to meet Fred Klipsch and Carol D’Amico together with Professor Lenkowsky. I also learned more about affiliate faculty member Bill Schneider’s fascinating work on humanitarianism and the role of philanthropy in the history of medicine. And thanks to Board of Visitors member Craig Leach, The Fund Raising School recently presented to the president, deans and chief development officers of Stony Brook University.

In late August, I met with John List, an eminent Economist based at the University of Chicago, who will be joining forces with us as the Visiting Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising. John has run the Science of Philanthropy Initiative there, and we will now co-host the Science of Philanthropy conference alternately in Chicago and Indianapolis. John is committed to doing a lecture in January in Miami at our Leadership Roundtable, and to welcoming our students and faculty to Chicago for seminars and consultations. We are delighted with this new development.

Kathi Badertscher I am also pleased to share that Dr. Kathi Badertscher will serve as a standing member of our faculty and Director of the Master’s Program. She served in these roles in a visiting capacity in the previous academic year and did an exemplary job in teaching, guiding our students and faculty in curricular issues, leading our efforts to better collaborate with SPEA at the graduate level, and generally advancing our scholarly community.

We are pleased to announce two new scholarship opportunities for our students made possible by generous donors. The school has received a gift of $100,000 toward scholarships for international learning opportunities. And The David Nathan Meyerson Prize for Leadership & Giving will be presented during next month’s board meeting to one undergraduate and one graduate winner, who will each receive a $2,500 prize for a traveling scholarship of nonprofit exploration and $1,800 to grant to 1-3 nonprofits.

When I spent a day with the Johns Hopkins Medicine Philanthropy Institute to explore collaboration with their research-driven approach to medical fundraising, they were aware that we have a highly regarded alumna playing a leadership role at a major medical center in San Diego. Kate Wayne, M.A. ’07, is Director of Development for UC San Diego Health. Also this month, alumna and National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu, Ph.D. ‘12, served as the keynote speaker for the Indy Arts Kickoff.

The highlight of the month, however, was welcoming new and returning students to campus. At orientation we heard a wonderful range of stories that brought these talented individuals to us. We not only have national diversity as our graduate students hail from places ranging from Bloomington and Muncie to Alaska and Alabama, but we also have new students from Armenia, Iran, China, and Hungary, the last coming to us under the Fulbright Program.

We look forward to welcoming you to Indianapolis for our October 6-7 Board of Visitors meeting, and we hope you can arrive a bit early to join us Wednesday evening, October 4, for the Lake Distinguished Visitor Lecture by Alan Cooperman, the Pew Research Center’s director of religion research, who will discuss “The Rise of the Religiously Unaffiliated: Why a decline in American religion matters to everyone.”

Student Orientation 2016

  • Dean Pasic hosted a Dean’s Welcome Reception for undergraduate and graduate students which also included an opportunity for students to meet their mentors.
  • Dean Pasic and faculty members Les Lenkowsky, Dwight Burlingame and Kathi Badertscher led a wide-ranging conversation with incoming M.A. and Ph.D. students about the value of professionalization in philanthropy based on the readings from The Self-Help Myth: How Philanthropy Fails to Alleviate Poverty, Erica Kohl-Arenas and other materials. The general conclusion was that while the skills for working more effectively in the nonprofit sector were important, so too was the ability to take a broader perspective on philanthropy and the issues it seeks to address, which studying the liberal arts can help develop.
  • Chief Operating Officer Marilyn Kuhn led a mentoring workshop for bachelor’s and master’s degree students, “The Power of a Mentoring Experience,” which included discovering characteristics of good mentoring relationships; evaluating their “mentee” skills; establishing agreements with their mentors; and setting goals for their mentoring relationships.
  • Party Bar - August 2016We hosted a Taco and Ice Cream Party Bar for new and returning undergraduate students to meet their classmates and student services team and learn about their student organization, the Philanthropy Ambassadors Club.

Faculty Activities, Awards, and Publications

  • Dr. Badertscher will serve as a standing member of our faculty and director of the master’s program. She held these positions in a visiting capacity during the 2015-2016 academic year.
  • John ListDr. John List, an eminent economist who is the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, will be the Visiting Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at our school. Dr. List has led the Science of Philanthropy Initiative at the University of Chicago, and we will co-host the Science of Philanthropy conference alternately in Chicago and Indianapolis going forward. He will present a lecture in January 2017 in Miami at our Leadership Roundtable, and will welcome our students and faculty to Chicago for seminars and consultations. The Hartsook Chair is the nation’s first endowed chair in fundraising.

International Programs

Professor of Practice Emeritus Les Lenkowsky arranged for a visit by Wojciech Kaczmarczyk, Minister of Civil Society and Equal Treatment of Poland as he explored the creation of a national volunteer corps. The visit included meetings with Dean Pasic and faculty as well as a site visit to meet with Serve Indiana members and hear them reflect on their motivations to serve.

  • Aug. 15–Sept. 1 — Janprapa Vichitcholchai, Deputy Director of the Fund Raising Bureau, The Thai Red Cross Society visited Indianapolis to participate in training through The Fund Raising School along with meetings with the American Red Cross arranged by M.A. ’12 alumna Barb Coury. The Thai Red Cross Society received a major gift for this training from Dr. Juree Vichit-Vadakan, a longtime friend of the school who developed a Center on Civil Society Studies at the National Institute for Development Administration in Thailand modeled on the IU Center on Philanthropy in the early 2000s. In 2007 Dr. Vichit-Vadakan was awarded an honorary degree by IU.
  • Helen Wang and Zimeng He of the Oriental Holy Land FoundationAugust 18 — Helen Wang and Zimeng He of the Oriental Holy Land Foundation visited the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and gave a presentation to incoming students on opportunities to intern with their foundation that works with leprosy villages in southern China. In 2014, the Foundation made a gift to our school to support two graduate assistantships.
  • August 25 — Returned students promoted our study abroad program Philanthropy and Public Policy: The German Context at the Fall Study Abroad Fair. The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy has received a gift of $100,000 toward scholarships for international learning opportunities.
  • August 29 — We welcomed Visiting Scholar Dr. Muhammet Ali Tiltay of Eskisehir Osmangazi University in Turkey, who will be with us for the academic year. Dr. Tiltay’s research interests include nonprofit marketing, donation behavior, and business ethics as well as giving motivations and corporate giving.

We also welcome back Visiting Scholar Dr. Sherry Wang, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Philanthropy at Sun Yat-sen University in China. Dr. Wang’s research interests include theater and ethics and she will be collaborating this fall with Dr. Kathi Badertscher to develop a comparative course on ethics of philanthropy in the U.S. and China.

Women's Philanthropy Institute

The Women’s Philanthropy Institute continues to fulfill its mission of research and education around gender and philanthropy. In August, Associate Director Andrea Pactor presented a keynote address at the Wyoming Nonprofit Conference in Cheyenne, encouraging the nonprofit leaders and fundraisers in attendance to focus on inclusive fundraising and engagement strategies. She also facilitated a breakout session with three outstanding women philanthropists from across the state.

Debra MeschDuring the fall semester, Director Debra Mesch is teaching the graduate level, three-credit Gender and Philanthropy course for the second year.

WPI welcomed new graduate assistant Kathryn Tolley, a second-year graduate student.

Lake Institute on Faith & Giving

  • August 4-8 Melissa Spas presented at, and attended, the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network conference in Portland, OR.
  • August 17 David King was the keynote speaker at The Church Network’s Indiana chapter meeting on Faith-based Fundraising.
  • August 19 The Lake Institute team had a half-day retreat at the Center for Congregations office to discuss the logistics of upcoming Lake events, as well as the priorities for our Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising and Creating Congregational Cultures of Generosity program development.
  • August 22-26 — King participated in the methodology training for incoming doctoral students.
  • Aug. 29-Sept. 2 Spas and Scott Williamson led a tailored four-day Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising course at the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary for 17 Masters of Divinity students.

  • Una OsiliAugust 5: Director of Research Una Osili, presented “The Future of Fundraising: What we know today and what it means for tomorrow” for The Rome Group in St. Louis, MO.
  • August 25: Osili presented on planned giving at the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable Summer Symposium in Denver, CO. She delivered the keynote address, on the power of data to change philanthropy.
  • Looking ahead: A Giving in Puerto Rico study will be released in San Juan, PR, on September 14. This study examines household giving patterns and behaviors in Puerto Rico.

The David Nathan Meyerson Prize for Leadership & Giving winners will be selected on Thursday, October 6 at 4:30pm at the Skyline Club. Finalists for this $2,500 prize for a traveling scholarship of nonprofit exploration will present to a panel of judges who will select one undergraduate and one graduate winner. IUPUI’s Strategic Plan positions our campus to improve the quality of life in communities worldwide. With a focus on increasing study abroad participation, we respectfully announce the creation of The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Study Abroad Scholarship. This new gift of $100,000 to the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy will allow us to award $25,000 per year for international educational experiences to our students in 2017 and 2018.
