- Lecture topic
While scholars of American religions are beginning to pay increasing attention to the spread of the Prosperity Gospel at home and abroad, less attention has been spent on the dimensions of American life that support this theological worldview. The objective of this lecture is to introduce listeners to the Prosperity Gospel, also known as the “Health and Wealth Gospel” and to demonstrate how it has its roots, in part, in the industrial revolution and valorization of business enterprise. This lecture will help attendees consider:
- The ways American Protestantism and capitalism have maintained an interdependent relationship throughout this nation’s history.
- Americans of all backgrounds have regarded consumerism and the acquisition of luxury goods as a viable means of cultural inclusion and even claims of citizenship.
- To offer a critique of the “health and wealth” gospel in American society is to critique, also, the ideologies of rugged individualism and upward social mobility that many in our nation hold dear.
