Through an ongoing research partnership with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, which began in 2006, the 2010 Bank of America Merrill Lynch Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy reveals significant shifts as well as consistent trends in the attitudes and giving behaviors of wealthy donors, including which nonprofit sectors they support, how they direct their largest gifts, what motivates them to give and to discontinue support for a nonprofit organization, where and how often they volunteer, and who they turn to for advice about philanthropy.

Women’s Philanthropy Institute research finds women are more likely to give and give more across nearly all income levels after controlling for factors that affect philanthropic behavior.

Giving USA Foundationâ„¢ and its research partner, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, today announced that estimated total charitable contributions from American individuals, corporations and foundations fell to $303.75 billion in 2009, down from a revised total of $315.08 billion for 2008. The 2009 drop represents a fall of 3.6 percent in current dollars. In 2009 the overall economy saw slight price deflation, which makes the adjusted change in giving year-over-year a decline of 3.2 percent.

The Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, a part of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, has awarded its 2010-2011 Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in the amount of $22,000 to Jared Peifer, a Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University.
