Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies

Make an original contribution to the field

In our doctoral program, you will learn to to conduct original research on philanthropy and related topics. You must take two years of coursework on campus, pass qualifying exams, defend a dissertation proposal, then research, write, and defend a final dissertation.

You should plan to complete coursework, pass exams, and defend your dissertation proposal within three years of full-time enrollment.

How to apply

To apply for our Ph.D. program:

  • Submit a formal application to the Ph.D. program
  • Submit official undergraduate and graduate transcripts to:

  • Receive a grade of B or higher on all courses applied to requirements
  • Submit GRE test scores (school code 1325)


Please submit all documents to the Indiana University Graduate Centralized Application System (CAS):

  • Three letters of reference
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • A three-page essay summarizing professional goals and proposed research area


Applications and all supporting documentation are required by January 15.
